Automated Cutting Systems for Tension Membrane Structures.
Tension membrane structures offer a unique combination of beauty, efficiency, and functionality. They're one of the best applications of modern technical textiles, combining art and science to create a wonderful environment.
Aeronaut has over 25 years of manufacturing specialised automated cutters for tension membranes and lightweight fabric structures where fabrics are very wide and need the accuracy of a flatbed cutting system.
At the Olympics, the soccer World Cup and in many of the biggest stadiums, shopping centres and public places around the world, you'll see groundbreaking tension membrane structures cut on Aeronaut's automated cutting systems. There are some very good reasons for this.
We have been making wide-span cutters for well over 25 years which have the accuracy and stiffness necessary to cut the heavy duty materials used in large fabric structures.
When you're cutting expensive materials with really low stretch, where accuracy of cutting and marking is essential, a flat bed cutter is the only way to work. Conveyor tables are simply not accurate enough. Aeronaut vacuum tables come in the size fabricators really need. It doesn't matter if fabric is 2.5 or 6 metres wide, Aeronaut will make a vacuum table and cutter to suit.
Aeronaut vacuum tables have a durable, thick and low-cost cutting surface which outlast other table surfaces by at least six times. The cutting surface is smooth and flat, easy to pull fabric over, and which gives an excellent edge finish to cut textiles.
There's a fairly big overlap between tension membranes, shade sails and other fabric structures in terms of the best cutter for the job. Obviously it has to be wide enough to cover the widest fabric and with large tension structures, the material may be very wide.
For really accurate work, the cutting table should be as long as the longest pattern however the alignment marks feature in Tangent software will let you pull down fabric and align cuts very accurately on a smaller table.
The Elektron Mono and Elektron Quattro are well suited to this work. A versatile multi-tool cutter like the Elektron Quattro is great if you need additional tools for punching and small details.
Don't ignore the marking tool! Many customers have found that one big advantage of an automated cutting system is that they can mark far more features on a pattern with the result that fabrication is much faster. Aeronaut's concentric pen holder can take everything from ball-points to paint pens to mark clearly and accurately on any fabric.
The Tools of Your Trade
Elektron Mono WS
The Elektron Mono WS is fitted with a single steered tool cutting head and a marker holder. Any Cam-lock tool can be fitted and changed in seconds making it an adaptable and economical cutting system, ideal for tension membrane and shade sail work.
Elektron Quattro
The Elektron Quattro is available with two to four steered axes and can be fitted with multiple markers, an inkjet printhead and Cyclops machine vision camera to configure a system for any specialised textile jobs.
Cam-lock Quick Change Tools
Cam-lock tools can be changed by hand in a few seconds so you can fit the tools you need, when you need. On the Elektron Quattro, tools are changed automatically under software control.
The Cam-lock tool range includes 18mm, 28mm and 45mm rotary blades, tangential or drag knives with various depth stops for normal and high friction materials, creasing and scoring tools in a wide range of profiles and drill-punch sizes from pin to over 25mm. Drill-punch inserts are easy to sharpen and exchange.
