Membrane,Tape and String Sails
Aeronaut has been involved with the manufacture of membrane or string sails for almost 30 years. This type of sailmaking has transformed making sails from a cottage industry little changed since Nelson to an industrial process with a race proven product seen on the water all over the world.

One of the first machines made by Aeronaut was a 5 metre stringer. Within a few years, Aeronaut had developed a 10.5 metre wide carbon gantry stringer which was working on sails from Finn dinghies to superyachts. Aeronaut developed the first commercially available software specifically for working with string sails and set the open-standard file formats used in most sail design software today.
It's fair to say that Aeronaut has more stringers working in independent lofts worldwide than any other manufacturer. Current products include 12 metre wide-span stringers working in tandem on floors over 50 metres long as well as heavy duty laminators.
Stringers and laminators are custom designed for individual customers to suit their work with different classes and sizes of yacht and their ideas on fibres, glue and lamination. The future for membrane sails seems bright with interesting developments in tape-laid sails, natural fibres and human friendly glues.
